Peterborough's Most Beautiful Cemeteries and Funeral Home
The Little Lake Cemetery Company was established in 1850:
Since 1850, the Little Lake Cemetery Company has been a non-profit and non-denominational cemetery. It was the first cemetery company in Canada to be established under the administration of a volunteer board of Lot Owners. Little Lake Cemetery and Highland Park Cemetery (completed in 1964) have provided full burial services to the community of Peterborough and its outlying region for over one hundred and fifty years. As time has progressed, so has the Little Lake Cemetery Company. We have added new facilities to meet the needs of those who would like to have the flexibility of more funeral, cremation and burial options.
The Little Lake Cemetery Company Board is made up of nine volunteer Lot Owners who have been elected to oversee the company in the best interests of the individuals, families and Lot Owners of Little Lake and Highland Park Cemeteries.
Our service makes the difference. As non-commissioned professionals, all of us are committed to providing families with the personalized, unique and meaningful services that they desire, in modern facilities and within our tranquil grounds unparalleled in our community.
As a non-profit organization, any funds the cemetery has in excess of costs are put back into the cemetery for improvement or future development. Upon purchase of a monument or marker, or interment rights to a grave or niche, a portion of the cost is placed in the Care and Maintenance Fund. This fund is securely invested and the interest produced supports the upkeep of the cemetery, in perpetuity.
The grounds of Little Lake and Highland Park Cemeteries are attractive and serene, a quiet place to reflect on the memories of your loved ones and those who have gone before.
In 1998, work began to restore the historic chapel at Little Lake Cemetery to its original beauty. The Little Lake Cemetery Company was honoured to be awarded the 1999 George Cox Award, presented by the Peterborough Historical Society for the chapel’s restoration. The chapel, built in 1878 in a Lancet style, has been the focal point of Little Lake Cemetery for many years.
For many generations the Little Lake Cemetery has been a visual historical record for the community of Peterborough. It has preserved the past and it will continue to preserve the future for many more generations. The Little Lake Cemetery Company continues today to address the needs of all people in the Peterborough area of all backgrounds and religious beliefs.
