Barbara Joan (Whitehead) Beck

BECK, Barbara Joan (nee Whitehead). Born August 24, 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to the late Robert and Beatrice Whitehead. Barbara died peacefully at PRHC March 24, 2018. Beloved wife of the late Richard (Dick) Beck for 56 years, loving mother of Eric (Sonia) of Rimouski QB, Norma Beaton (Harold) of Edmonton AB, Kris (Stana) of Kaleden BC, Nancy of Peterborough ON, and predeceased by her son, Steven (Ilona) of Vancouver BC. Dear Amma/Grandma to Julie, Adam, Andrew (Lindsey), Jeff (Jessica), and Adam Beck, as well as Kevin and Scott Tuck. Barb leaves behind several great/great-great grandchildren, proudly seeing 5 generations of family. Dear sister-in-law of Joan and Bob Publow and Michael Beck of Winnipeg. Special friend of the late Don Sheppard and his daughter Nancy, and dear friend to Carl Bedford of Peterborough. Barb spent 68 years in Peterborough, raising her family and actively serving her community by volunteering and working hard to make Peterborough a better place for all. She was a community, consumer, and social activist even into her 80s. Barb was also an active member of the Peterborough Theatre Guild, and a proud supporter of the Arts community in Peterborough. She was humbled to receive the Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellowship Award for volunteerism, the YWCA's Woman of Distinction Award, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award. She was inducted into Peterborough's Pathway of Fame for Community Betterment in 2014. Her family and friends hold many fond memories, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at Little Lake Cemetery in a private, family ceremony. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday March 30, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough (corner of Weller Street and Medical Drive). A reception will follow the service at the same location. In lieu of flowers, Barb asked that donations be made to Hospice Peterborough or a charity of your choice.
