It was with great sadness that we learned of Dick's passing. Dick was a wonderful friend and colleague. He served with distinction on the PRHC Ethics Committee and Research Ethics Board for many years. He will be greatly missed.

So sorry to hear of your Dad and Grandpa passing. I had not seen him since the last Palmateer reunion. He will now be with your Mom.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mark, Andrew and Alicia, please except my and Edra's condolences of the passing of your father. I'm afraid I didn't hear about the passing of your mother until some time after, so please except condolences now. Our thoughts are with you, your cousin John.

While my contact with His Honour Judge Batten was rather limited, I did have more extensive contact with his three children growing up in Peterborough. And it is for that reason that I wish to send my heartfelt condolences to Mark, Andrew (Andy), and Alicia. In most cases, our parents play a crucial role in shaping us into the people we become. Without doubt, you were blessed to have a distinguished and cultured father (not to mention mother) and to have felt his love and presence until he reached the ripe old age of 89. Take heart in his gift to you, and know that you were equally a gift to him.

Dignity, honest, loyal, calm, sensitive, considerate, sincere, warm - with a captivating smile. To have walked through life this way is an uncommon inspiring, exemplary legacy.
Message from Batten Hunt Camp

The Batten Hunt Camp has been in existence for many years due to the kindness of Judge Batten allowing the use of his land. Though the members are diminishing it still remains and the members wish to express their condolences to the family as Judge Batten was the nicest landlord/friend to the Garbutt family and other members.

My memories of 'Mr' Batten are filled with laughter, kindness, joy of life, an amusing quiet humour and true love of his wife and family. I remember, ever since I was very young, running through and around the family house and cottage. Parents, who were your parents too when you were present. Always a smile and a "..... and how are you miss Susan". Alicia's eyes lighting up at the sight of him and his equalling hers. A big teddy bear with kindness and love for all. I will miss seeing him at the Jubilaires/Bonnachord concerts, enjoying his company and also his joy in watching his friends sing where he once was.
Alicia, Andy and Mark you have had such a great opportunity to love and be loved by such a kind soul. I am very saddened by this passing as I know my family is too.

We regret that we are unable to attend the funeral because we are presently in Europe. Dick was Ted's senior judicial colleague for 22 years. Dick's wisdom and guidance was appreciated through the difficult shoals of their work. During his years on the Bench, Dick was probably the most respected judge by the lawyers as well as the general public. Dick's balance, humour and kindness were present every day.

Dick was a superb example of a person serving as a judge. Intelligent, considerate to all in court -- as Marty Murphy said when Dick retired -- "Even people he was sentencing to jail would say 'thank you' to him".
I am glad I knew him.

I remember Judge Batten as a very decent and honourable man who treated everyone with courtesy and respect. It was never a chore to appear before him, no matter how difficult the client or case.

It is sometimes the case that the complimentary description in an obituary bears little resemblance to the reality observed by others. The author of His Honour Judge Batten's obituary was very accurate in describing this truly remarkable man. I had the privilege of watching him discharge his responsibilities as a judge with compassion and was the recipient of stories about some who appeared before him that demonstrated an encyclopedic knowledge of their family background that no doubt influenced them in their transgressions. He understood people and their foibles. He never let his position harden him. He was respectful to all and a mentor to those unwitting people like me who only realized after hearing a story well told that it contained a lesson in living well and in doing the right thing. He was one of the nicest people I have ever known and I cannot imagine the how keenly the loss of such a man will be felt by his family and friends. My heartfelt condolences to all. May your faith be a comfort and support, now and always. I sincerely regret my inability to attend His Honour's service of celebration due to being engaged elsewhere.
