BATTEN, Richard “Dick” Bentham – Peacefully and surrounded by his children at the Peterborough Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 in his 90th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Mary “Aileen” Batten (nee Palmateer). Dick will be lovingly remembered by his children: Mark Batten (Stephanie), Andrew Batten (Debbie) and Alicia Batten (Terry Rothwell); and grandsons Wil and Isaac. He will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Marion Batten, brother-in-law Elwood Palmateer (Barb) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his brother John Batten and parents Henry Batten and Mildred (nee Bentham). Dick had many interests, including singing, travelling and learning about other cultures, reading about history, theology, science, and cars, and listening to opera. He was committed to the public good through his work with service clubs and the church, as well as in his profession as a lawyer and subsequently as a judge for many years. He loved life, and he loved other people, treating everyone he met with respect, fairness, and compassion. In keeping with Dick’s wishes, cremation has taken place. All are welcome to attend a Memorial Service for Dick at Emmanuel United Church East (formerly George Street United), 534 George Street North, on Thursday, September 21st, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Everyone is invited to join the family following the service in the church hall for a light luncheon followed by a private family interment at Little Lake Cemetery. In memory of Dick, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Aileen Batten Bursary (Trent University) would be appreciated by the family.
