Robert "Steve" Richey Obituary

RICHEY, Steve - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Richey on Friday, April 13th, 2018 of a massive heart attack. Steve was born on July 5, 1963 and grew up in Peterborough, Ontario.  When he was young Steve spent all of his time playing sports, particularly hockey and lacrosse.  When he was 18 he realized his dream of becoming a goalie for the Kingston Canadians before being traded to the London Knights where he played his final season.

Steve returned to Peterborough and met his soulmate Lori in 1989 and they spent 34 wonderful years together.  Steve & Lori raised two wonderful boys, Kyle (Natt) and Travis (Ieva) who were the light of his life. They allowed him to carry on his love for sports as he was with them every step of the way, either as their coach or their biggest fan.  Steve continued to give back to the sports community throughout his life acting as a coach, mentor (on and off the ice) and scout. Steve has made a positive impact upon countless young athletes and their families.

In 2014, Steve welcomed his first grandchild, Lucas. His second grandson Nathan joined the family in 2017 and he was excited to meet his third grandchild expected August, 2018. The grandchildren will forever miss their special papa (Steve was the favourite).

Steve started at Trent University as a carpenter in 1989 and finished as Supervisor of Facilities Maintenance.  He loved his time at Trent, in particular all the special friendships he made along the way.

Steve was most at peace while fishing and loved his time at Rice Lake.  This was a special spot for Steve and he cherished the family and friends that we had surrounding us there.

Survived by his mom Judy (Ian), father Bob (Sylvia) and brother Todd (Larraine), along with countless others. He will be desperately missed as his bond with family was so strong, having a special connection with each and every one of them.

Forever remembered by many other family members and friends.  We know that Steve has had a positive impact upon many lives and would love for these stories to be shared with us. This will allow us all to reminisce the good times with family, present and future. Please send a message to memoriesofsteverichey@gmail.com and share a story of Steve and how he impacted your life.

We invite his friends to join us at the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough for a Celebration of Steve’s life on Friday, April 20th, 2018 from 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers we ask that a donation be made in Steve's honour to the ‘Peterborough Minor Hockey Council AAA Petes’, P.O. Box 553, K9J 6Z6 (attention: Steve Richey). These donations will allow the family to carry on his legacy within the Peterborough Minor hockey system.

Steve will be deeply missed by many, but remembered as a fun loving, genuine, stand up guy.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
