Obituary

It is with deep love and sadness that the family of Donald Victor McConnell, affectionately known as “Doctor” or “Gramps,” share his peaceful passing on February 16, 2026, at the age of 84, with family by his side.

Born and raised in Norwood, Don later built a beautiful life with his wife, Sheila, raising their family in Peterborough. Family was always at the centre of who Don was. He was endlessly proud of his children, Paul (Allyson) and Michelle (Jason), who will forever carry his warmth and humour with them. Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with his grandchildren: Katelyn (Pete), Brittney (Keegan), Brooke, Cohen, Bransen, and his great-grandson, Crew. He loved watching them shine, whether on the basketball court, the soccer field, the stage, or the rugby field. Their energy and accomplishments filled him with immeasurable pride.

Don was known for his kindness, sharp wit, and steadfast devotion to the people he loved. He was a gentle protector to Sheila, and he found true joy in life’s simple pleasures: gardening together, playing cards with family and friends, taking scenic fall drives, or sharing stories and laughter around the table. Those who knew Don will remember his remarkable ability to make others feel seen, valued, and welcomed. Whether he was offering a thoughtful piece of advice, sharing a perfectly timed joke, or listening with genuine care, Don had a way of bringing calm, comfort, and connection wherever he went. His generosity, quiet, steady, and unwavering, remains one of his greatest legacies.

In the years when Paul and Michelle were growing up, Don and Sheila poured their hearts into supporting their children’s passions through the Canadian Knights Drum Corps. Don served as director, leading with his characteristic steadiness and commitment, while Sheila cared for the group through her thoughtful meal planning, cooking, and volunteer coordination. Their summers were spent travelling across Canada and the United States for competitions, proudly cheering on their children as they excelled in their craft. Don and Sheila opened their home and their hearts to countless young people, creating a safe place to land and a sense of belonging for many. Don’s role within the corps reflected the very qualities that defined him throughout his life: compassion, reliability, and an unwavering love for others.

Don also found immense joy in travelling, a passion he and Sheila shared across many decades. For years, their timeshare in Barbados was a cherished retreat, where Don delighted in long beachside walks with Sheila and in creating countless memories with friends who joined them. In later years, they spent their winters in Florida, drawn again to the ocean and its gentle rhythm. They treasured happy hours with neighbours, dinners and card games with friends, and the simple comfort of being together. Ever dependable, Don often chose to drive south to ensure they had everything they needed, another quiet expression of his steady care and devotion.

Don deeply valued his friendships and the communities that shaped his life. He was always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or offer support to anyone who needed it. He dedicated nearly 40 years of hard work to GE, retiring with the same pride, loyalty, and humility that defined every part of his life. His generosity of spirit will be remembered by many.

Above all, Don leaves behind a family bound not only by love but by the spirit of togetherness he nurtured. His lessons: love deeply, work hard, laugh often, and cherish the little things, will continue to guide his family through every story shared, every tradition honoured, and every warm memory carried forward. Though his absence will be deeply felt, the imprint of his kindness and devotion will remain everlasting in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Fairhaven for their compassion, care, and support. In honour of Don’s memory, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
