Eleanor Shipley (Hedley) peacefully passed away on Sunday November 2, 2025, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband Mel in August 2022. Eleanor was the loving sister of Gloria McCarthy, Carolyn Melanson, Bob Hedley (Gayle), Lynn Gorman and Jack Hedley (Annamarie) and sister-in-law of Reg Shipley. She was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was predeceased by her sisters Dolores Mawdsley (Ralph), Anne McIver (Kenneth), Joan Hedley, Jeanette Gallant (Joe), Susan Hedley and her brother Peter Hedley.
Eleanor was born in River Hebert, Nova Scotia in August 1935 to Robert and Marion Hedley. Eleanor and her sister Dolores moved to Toronto in 1953. They lived in High Park enjoying the city life and dancing at the Palais Royale. In 1957 Mel and Eleanor were married and after many years in Toronto, they made Peterborough their home in 1999. Eleanor was passionate about her home, neighbourhood and family. She would walk several times a day in the neighbourhood enjoying conversations with everyone. She especially loved watching the children play on the street. She knew their names and always made a point of engaging with them. She looked forward to phone calls with her family, especially the Friday night call with Gloria. Her goal for this year was to celebrate her 90th birthday, which she did in August. Eleanor will be truly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at Royal Gardens for their care and kindness. Also, the compassion and care shown from the Palliative Care (D2) team at Peterborough Regional Health Centre was very much appreciated. We would also like to thank the many neighbours on Kingswood Drive who watched over Eleanor. We would especially like to thank RoseMary whose thoughtfulness was valued by Eleanor.
Cremation has taken place, and interment will be in Ragged Reef Cemetery, Nova Scotia in the spring.
