Frederick "Fast Freddy" Samuel Cathers
April 6, 1932 – August 24, 2026
It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frederick Samuel Cathers on August 24, 2026, at Springdale Nursing Home, at the age of 94.
Born in Ireland on April 6, 1932, Fred was a man of remarkable determination and spirit from a young age. At just 18 years old, bound for a new life in North America, he planted and harvested a field of oats to earn the money for his boat ticket across the Atlantic. That bold, hardworking journey eventually brought him to Peterborough, Ontario, where he would lay down deep roots and build a vibrant life.
Fred began his career in Canada with General Electric Manufacturing before finding his true calling in sales with Maxwell Printing, where his natural charisma and warmth made him exceptionally successful. Alongside his wife, Fred also took on a cherished community venture, purchasing and operating Faye’s Bridal Shoppe in Peterborough for more than 60 years.
Affectionately known to many as "Fast Freddy," he was instantly recognizable by his infectious smile and adored for his kind, caring personality. He had a rare gift for making people feel welcomed and valued, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Fred leaves behind a proud legacy in his family. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Mark Cathers; his partner, Lee-Anne Watson; his cherished grandsons, Austin and Owen; their mother, Michelle Cathers and Lee-Anne’s children, Kaitlin, Nolan, and Austin. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family, near and far, dear friends, and the community he served for decades.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at PRHC and Springdale Nursing Home for their compassionate care.
In keeping with Fred’s wishes, the family will hold a private celebration of life. Expressions of sympathy and online condolences may be shared through the Highland Park Funeral Centre. For those who wish to honor Fred’s memory, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough would be greatly appreciated by the family.
