George Wilkins Obituary

WILKINS, George (LUV) William – April 14, 1932 – January 2, 2021 passed away peacefully at Peterborough Regional Health Centre at the age of 88.
George enjoyed a life well lived with his beloved wife of 68 years along with their 3 children; Steve (Sandi Paul), Pam (John Porter) and Julie (David Devine).

George was born in Toronto Ontario, the youngest of five of Matilda and Jack Wilkins. Predeceased by Jack and Ted, survived by his sister Ruth and brothers Bob and Alex.

George met the love of his life Joy Evelyn Pugsley while attending a church dance at the age of 16 and 4 years later they married on June 27, 1952.

George became a hockey goalie at the age of 13 and had a passion for the game. He played in the Big Six at Scarborough Arena and then with the Stouffville Clippers. This is where George met many of his life long friends. He was “The Guy” always telling jokes, was quick witted and loved his nicknames; “Sieve” and the one from Joy “Luv” that all the hockey wives adopted.

With George working in his trade as a Lithographer (or stripper, as he liked to refer to it), he and Joy were able to build a cottage that became a focal point for the whole family. George or Poppa was an awesome grandfather to Krista (Shawn Fergusson), Adam (Seona Furlong), Matthew (Ryan Sisson), Jason (Heidi Kulla), Jordan Porter (Telsi Szanyi), Stephanie Porter (David Sharp), Tyler McKay (Kelly Rathgeber), Joshua McKay and Mitchell Montgomery, and grandfather to 10 great grand children.

George’s special place was the cottage, it was where he spent hours talking around the kitchen table telling stories and sharing his wisdom through what we call “Dadisms” such as; “Can’t put a old head on young shoulders, do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life, can’t make rats out of mice”. It’s where he enjoyed his family, playing card games, skiing, fishing, horseshoes, cutting wood and loving life with his family. His laughter, kindness and positive nature will be missed by the family who loved him so dearly. The Man, the myth, the legend.

A Celebration of Life will take place in late summer or early Fall of 2021 pending COVID-19 restrictions.
