We are sad to announce the passing of Ivan Bateman on Monday, Sept 21 in his 97th year. Beloved husband of the late Carol Bateman (2024). Loving father of Jennifer, Greg (Charlene) and Susan (Ray). He was the adored grandfather of Thomas, James, Michael, Sophie and Adam. Ivan will be missed by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Martha Bentley. Ivan was born in Argentina, but his father returned the family to Bristol England where he grew up. As a teen he started work at Bristol Aeroplane Company where he earned his Higher National Certificate in production engineering. His interest in aircraft led to him joining RAF 501 squadron of the RAF auxiliaries as ground support. In 1954 he emigrated to Canada at the urging of a friend working on the Avro project. He ended up taking what he thought was going to be an interim job with the De Laval company in Peterborough as a tool designer. He stayed with De Laval / Alfa Laval for almost 30 years and eventually became manager of the industrial division. Ivan always had an interest in recycling and environmental issues and after leaving Alfa Laval, he became the Solid Waste Coordinator for the City of Peterborough where he was responsible for setting up Peterborough’s curbside recycling program. He organized the first hazardous waste collection days which led to the permanent hazardous waste collection operation. Ivan had endless curiosity and was a life-long learner. His interest in environmental issues remained after retiring from the City and joined the board of Peterborough Greenup. Always interested in the community, he also worked with the Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC) and Trent Valley Archives. He enjoyed his time outdoors, whether it was gardening, snowshoeing in winter, spending time at the cottage or canoe trips including the Baja Peninsula and Baffin Island. He also enjoyed his trips to England and South America to visit family.
Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 2 at 1:00 pm at Highland Park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Rd, Peterborough with funeral service at 2:00 pm. Reception to follow.
Many thanks to the 6th floor nursing staff at PRHC for their kindness and care of Dad the past few weeks.
Donations would be gratefully accepted in his name to Peterborough Green Up, Trent Valley Archives or the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra.
