Obituary

Pack up the moon, dismantle the sun, extinguish every star, for it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Leslie Trebbne Reid. James died tragically in a hiking accident on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, at the age of 28. He was born on July 16th, 1996, in Peterborough, Ontario, to Stephen Reid and Heather Trebbne and was enthusiastically welcomed by his older brother, Francis (Frank). He was raised in the countryside near Omemee and from a young age, James displayed a passion for the outdoors, physical activity and music, which would become defining aspects of his life.

James attended St. Catherines Elementary School, where he honed his agility and physicality as well his imagination and creativity. His love for unicycling, juggling, karate and music blossomed during these formative years. He then graduated from St. Peter’s Secondary School where he was known for being an active member of the concert and pit bands, playing tuba, piano, percussion and occasionally saxophone. With his bands, Clockwork Circus and Maybe Later, he performed several gigs both at the school and downtown including the Youth for Youth fundraisers.  He was an Ontario Scholar, lettered, and received an award for academic achievement and contribution to school and community life.

James attended Humber College where he earned a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology. The deep and abiding friendships he nurtured during these years were amongst his proudest, most valued achievements. Shortly after graduation, he accepted a position at Yaskawa Canada where he thrived as a robotics technician, often expressing how great his colleagues were and how much he loved the challenges and opportunities for learning and travel that this role offered. It was during this time that James developed his love for, and amazing skill at, indoor rock climbing. He also developed another love at this time, love for his wonderful partner Kayla Platt; they were truly a perfect pair.

A talented musician, James had a deep appreciation for classic rock, often listening to legends like Queen, Pink Floyd and Rush. He shared this love of music with his father and brother, often attending concerts with one or both. His rock and roll persona and his values were reflected in his body art. He mastered multiple instruments, including guitar, piano and drums. His creativity shone through in his renditions of covers and in his own compositions.

Grieved beyond measure are his father, mother, his beloved brother and sister-in-law Romielyn, and the love of his life, Kayla.  Joining them in deep sorrow are grandmother Grace Reid, aunt Sharon (Rod), cousins Jessica (Mike), Violet, Dana, Caylee (Darryl), Maxwell, uncle Guy and aunt Dorothy and cousins William and Leah. He is predeceased by his adoring grandmother Pauline and grandfathers Frank Trebbne and Allan Reid.

James was known for his sense of humour and an unwavering honesty that endeared him to everyone. He was a passionate advocate not only for his beliefs but for the fair treatment of others. He was the beating heart of our family, a bright and vibrant flame, and his laughter filled every room. We will miss his beautiful smiling face, his energy and joy, and his warm loving hugs. We will love and cherish James forever.

A memorial will be held on November 16, 2024, at 2 pm at Highland Park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Rd., Peterborough, ON K9J 1C5. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity supporting children, a shelter or a food bank.
