With quiet resolve, the support of her palliative care team led by Dr. Morelli and the compassionate staff at Hospice Peterborough, Karen passed away on January 30, 2026.
Born in Peterborough, she met and married Dennis while both were students at Trent University. She pursued her chosen profession, becoming a history teacher at St. Joseph's Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall and later Department Head. Her commitment to helping students achieve their full potential in school and in life earned her the Outstanding Teacher Award from Carleton University.
Retirement and a move back to Peterborough in 2007 opened new opportunities to combine her love of history with volunteering. Karen sat on the Museum Advisory Board, gave historical tours for Trent Valley Archives, and presented talks on a variety of topics to community groups. Her concern for seniors led to an extended term on Age Friendly Peterborough. In 2019 she received the Cultural Betterment Civic Award from the City of Peterborough.
Extensive foreign travel with Dennis enriched their lives and supported her wide-ranging genealogical research on their family trees. An accomplished artist, published author, and engaging public speaker, her life was full and left an impact on all those she met.
A loving wife, supportive mother to sons Trent and Craig, a friend and confidante to her daughter-in-law Betty Carter-Edwards (Filo), and a favourite Nana to Sean, Callum, and Chloe, she predeceased brothers Eric (Heather) and Scott (Keri).
To honour Karen's life a Celebration of Life Reception will be held from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL HOME RECEPTION CENTRE.
