The world has lost a vibrant and beautiful light. It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we share the passing of Katherine Elizabeth Doughty at the young age of 66, surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 9th at Peterborough Regional Health Center.
Affectionately also known as Lester, Ethel, and Chatty Kathy, she was the foundation of her family and will be greatly missed by her devoted husband Kirk, daughters Nichole (Kieran), Christina (Adam), and Kate (Jack), as well as her grandchildren Lillian and Carson. Predeceased by her parents (Fran and Duffy Teasdale) and beloved brother Steve. She will also be dearly missed by her siblings Tom (Brenda), Sandy (Len), and Deb (Rob), her in-laws Pat, Gary, Cathy, and her many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Kathy’s optimism in life was an inspiration to all who were fortunate to know her. When she beat cancer in 2015, she fearlessly and resolutely assured us that she would be OK, and against all odds she remained cancer-free. This same attitude and strength are what granted us so much additional time with her over the last few months.
Kathy was an incredibly social butterfly and she made friends everywhere she went. As a long-time employee of the LCBO, Kathy connected with literally every person she met; coworker and customer alike. Outside of work, Kathy could be found socializing in any situation she found herself in and was often considered as a second Mom to her daughters’ friends who knew and loved her as well. An avid card shark, Kathy took pride and money from many opponents and never said no to an opportunity to play gin, crib, or euchre.
Countless hours were spent touring in the Miata with her husband Kirk, finding patios for cold beverages, wine, and of course, delicious food. For the past two years they were all but inseparable, highlighting a love and marriage of 46 years.
Kathy’s ability to keep up to date with all events and her keen eye for detail would have suited her well as a detective, and she would have happily joined Angela Lansbury on Murder She Wrote or any of the other crime shows she loved to watch. Instead, she used those skills to always know what her kids were up to.
As a mother, Kathy was strict and held a high bar that was often lamented by her daughters, but her efforts and approach instilled a strong work ethic and a solid moral compass in all three of her daughters for which they are eternally grateful.
The family would like to extend all of their gratitude to Dr. Morelli for providing such kind and compassionate care for Kathy over the last two years – Mom loved you. Your support, along with the rest of the palliative care team at PRHC, was so appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at PRHC.
To truly honour Kathy, a celebration of life will take place on Sunday, November 2nd, in the upstairs of Riley’s Pub from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, with speeches at 3:00 pm. All are invited to join, share a memory, and raise a glass to an incredible woman.
