LEAHY, Lillian Jean

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Jean Leahy, at Extendicare Peterborough. Predeceased by husband William Peter Leahy and son John Leahy.   She was surrounded with love with her children beside her until the end.  

She was the daughter of John Burfield and Hilda Thompson predeceased.  Mom is survived by her children, Patrick (Denise) and grandchildren Robin, Andrea (Troy) Plumley and step grandson Lawrence LaBossiere.  Daughter Patricia Sweeting (Derrick pre deceased) granddaughters Tasha LaFave (Kris), Jodi LaFave (Jay), and Cassandra Sweeting (Bill).  Daughter Penny Leahy-Belsey (Peter) granddaughters Samantha Cormier (Brandon) Jenna Vasey (Brandon) Laura Vasey (Holden), A.J. Belsey (Tara) Josh Belsey. Daughter Terri-Lynn Leahy-LaFreniere (Dion) grandchildren, Amanda Sanzo (Nicola) Michael Shea (Tonya) Mathew Shea. Jean had 20 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter. Sister Gayle Gordon (Norm predeceased) Donald Burfield (Eva predeceased), Philip (June predeceased), Robert (Keith) and Debra Robillard (Peter). Siblings (pre deceased) Norma (Bill)Williamson, brother’s John (Violet) Harry and Butch.  Jean was a founding member of the Ladies Old Timers Softball League established in 1979 and continues today.  She had memories with the ladies until she retired at 70. She was a member of Branch 52 Peterborough Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Past President of Branch 389 in Havelock & Zone 5 Sports Officer and many other positions. She was known for playing BINGO, cards, and knitting for many in need over the years.  Her nickname was Jean Jean the Knitting machine. She will be missed by all who knew her.  Celebration of Life will be held on May 18, 2023 at the ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH #52, 1550 Lansdowne Street West in Peterborough from 4:00-7:00 PM.  In memory of Jean and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 52 sports fund (as she loved her sports) would be appreciated by the family.  Online condolences may be made at www.highlandparkfuneralcentre.com
