Obituary

Lyle passed peacefully on the morning of December 23, 2025, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, following a courageous and dignified battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the love of his family, including his wife and soulmate, Mary (Mason), and his sons, Chris (Robin) and Todd (Katie), who were the greatest pride and joy of his life.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his sisters Sandra (Ronnie) and Susan (Ron), his brother Rick, and many nieces and nephews. Lyle was also a devoted and adoring grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Julia, who brought him immeasurable happiness and remained the light of his life.

Lyle was, above all else, a family man. A devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, he was known for his warmth, wisdom, gentle humor, and generosity of spirit. He was a gifted storyteller, teacher, mentor, and coach, always ready with encouragement, guidance, or a listening ear. His calm presence, kind smile, and steady reassurance brought comfort to many, even in life’s most difficult moments.

A man of strong values and an unwavering work ethic, Lyle took great pride in his career. He owned and operated Guardian Flame Proofing for more than 30 years, leading his business with integrity, dedication, and respect. The relationships he built through his work were as meaningful to him as the business itself, and many of those connections became lifelong friendships.

One of Lyle’s greatest joys was his 38 years with the Kawartha Kavaliers. Through music, travel, and shared tradition, he formed deep and lasting bonds that enriched his life immeasurably. He especially cherished the camaraderie, laughter, and memories made along the way, all of which held a special place in his heart.

An avid sportsman through and through, Lyle loved both competition and camaraderie. He played hardball and enjoyed golf, was a proud member of the Lindsay Rugby Club, and found his greatest fulfillment coaching his sons’ hockey and baseball teams, guiding them to the All-Ontario Championships. He was always their biggest supporter, whether cheering from the rink, the diamond, or the sidelines. Of all his many accomplishments, Lyle was most proud of the men his sons became.

Lyle began a lifelong adventure when he married the love of his life, Mary, on August 5, 2008, in Las Vegas. Together they shared a life filled with laughter, travel, and deep love, guided by the belief that the best journeys were always about the people beside you. Of the many places they explored, Portugal held a special place in Lyle’s heart for its beauty, warmth, and culture. Though health challenges prevented him from making the long-anticipated trip to Ireland, he often spoke of the Cliffs of Moher and the pubs he hoped to visit while enjoying his favorite Guinness.

A long-awaited highlight was finally attending a Buffalo Bills game and tailgate party, followed by a memorable day watching his beloved Toronto Blue Jays. While he enjoyed cheering for many teams, the Green Bay Packers always held a special place in his heart and remained his team through and through.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the many medical professionals who cared for Lyle throughout the past year. A special thank you to Dr. Christopher Blake, Dr. Brennan Hughes, and the compassionate nurses and staff at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, especially the palliative care team, whose kindness and support brought comfort to Lyle and his family during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lyle’s memory may be made to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre in support of the palliative care unit.

Lyle hoped to reach his final Christmas, knowing in his heart that he would not. He held each moment close, cherishing the love that surrounded him. He understood the weight of goodbye, yet faced it with quiet strength, dignity, and gratitude for the time he had. While his absence leaves an ache and an empty chair, his love remains — forever close, gently gathered beneath the stars. He now rests on a path leading to paradise.

Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Lyle’s life on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Highland Park Reception Centre, 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough, Ontario.

This is not a time for sadness, but an opportunity to remember Lyle as he would have wanted — through shared stories, laughter, and the warmth of good company. His legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
