GLEESON, Mary Agnes (nee Milne) of Peterborough, Ontario passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025 at St. Joseph's at Fleming in her 104th year, surrounded by family.
Born in Kingston, Ontario on April 3, 1922, Mary lived a life defined by love, faith and devotion to her family.
She is the daughter of the late Mary (Mollie) and Ben Milne of Kingston. She married the love of her life Michael J. P. Gleeson in 1944 with whom she shared 25 wonderful years before his passing in August 1969. She is predeceased by her brothers Robert, Hugh, Leo and her sisters Monica Grasse and Phyllis Carlson.
Mary attended Notre Dame School in Kingston and worked with the National War Services Department. When she married Michael, she dedicated herself fully to raising her children. They moved to Belleville in 1964 and Mary accepted a position with the Belleville Intelligencer Newspaper and later as Clerk at Belleville General Hospital. She had many interests and enjoyed singing with the Melody Bells. She was a member of Pathfinders BGH Club, CWL member, Charismatic Renewal, Cursillo Movement, Telecare Belleville and FSNA. She moved to Peterborough in 2013, living at Applewood Manor. The last eight years, after a stroke, she lived at St. Joseph's at Fleming. She said there was no place that could have been better for her to live.
She is the proud and loving mother of Bob (Mary Jane), Tom (Anne Marie), Peter (Sue) and Pat (Maria). Her daughter Margaret Brazil (Joe) passed away July 2022. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Michael and Susan Gleeson (Jefferson de la Cour); Jeff Gleeson (Pam), Andrew Gleeson (Vivian), Laura Chapman (Greg) and Mary Ellen Holmes (Dan); Kim Seidl (Michael), Jeremy Gleeson; Aaron Brazil (Miriam), Anna and Nathan Brazil (Cherie); Ben and Eric Gleeson. She is survived by seventeen great grandchildren.
She was a loving wife and mother and friend and her memory will remain within the hearts of all those she touched. Those who knew her remember her kindness, her generosity and her ability to find beauty in little things.
A Celebration of her Life will be held on Thursday, August 28, at 11:00 at St. Joseph’s Church, 399 Victoria Avenue Belleville, Ontario. Internment will take place in St. James Cemetery with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's at Fleming Foundation.
