Mary Michelle “Shelly” Appleton

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Michelle “Shelly” Appleton. Born and raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Shelly was admired for her strong moral compass, easygoing nature, and kind disposition. Ever the loyal companion, she rarely initiated adventure but was always tagged along for the ride —arriving fashionably late, of course.

Shelly came to Ontario to complete her nursing education, a testament to her dedication and compassion.

In 1987, she embarked on a new chapter, founding two successful businesses-Appleton & Associates and Appleton tax services where clients quickly became friends. Her warmth and integrity were the foundation of her success and personal relationships.

A 50 year member of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, Shelly cherished time on the course, as well as reading, playing bridge, traveling, and visiting her beloved cottage and nursing classmates on PEI. She was a devoted wife, supporting her husband Roy through his lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, often seen at his window during the pandemic—a true symbol of unwavering love.

Shelly is survived by her sister Shirley Koke (Carr), daughters Vicki (Pedro Ramalheiro) and Kelly, granddaughters Lucie, Piper, and Holly, and many beloved family members on PEI. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends who stood by us throughout this journey; she felt your love and devotion to the very end.

A celebration of Shelly’s life will take place early May in Peterborough, followed by a service in Charlottetown mid-July.  Details to follow in the coming months. In lieu of flowers donations to Kawartha Food Share, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Margaret Bahen Hospice would be appreciated.
