Miloslav Hovorka

Miloslav (Mike) Hovorka passed away peacefully on March 10th 2019 at St. Joseph’s at Fleming in Peterborough, Ontario Canada. Mike leaves behind a loving family including son Mark, his wife Meg, and their two children Evan and Andrei; daughter Alice and her husband Peter; as well as many wonderful friends around the world.
Mike was a generous, ambitious, passionate, and hilarious person. Born to Jan and Helena Hovorka in Nová Řiše, Czechoslovakia in 1932, and brother to Jarda, Jan, and Jiři. He immigrated as a political refugee to Canada in 1968 with beloved wife Alena (1946-2017). They built a rich and successful life together in Peterborough, surrounded by many dear friends, neighbours, and colleagues within the region’s closely knit Czech community and extending well beyond.
Mike was a devoted father and Děda, with many hours spent on drives to toy stores and sports practices, playing in the yard, collecting seashells, spoiling dogs, keeping his children’s cars roadworthy and clean, and moving furniture between university dorms and houses. Mike was always there to help with his enthusiasm, smile, and instructions.
Mike had an entrepreneurial and industrious spirit. He trained himself as a tool machinist, learning his trade in a single day. He then turned to real estate, building several homes for the Peterborough community, including a beautiful home for his own family. Mike travelled the world with family and friends through exciting holidays and adventures. He especially loved his time in the sun at Bonita Springs, Florida.
He loved watching sports – hockey, soccer, Formula One, tennis, the Olympics, golf, and even bowling in its heyday of the 1970s. He was a devoted follower of Czech and Canadian athletes, a passion he gifted to Mark and Alice.
Words cannot express how much Mike will be missed by his family and his friends. At Mike’s request, no service will be held. Please keep your memories of him in your hearts.
