Obituary

Peter Prinsen Geerligs, of Peterborough, Ontario, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2026, at the age of 81.

Peter was the beloved husband of Corry, father to Adam (Catherine) and Bart (Heather), proud grandfather of Benjamin and loving big brother of Harriet Nixon (Roy Pope). He was predeceased by his parents, Hendrik and Willemine Prinsen Geerligs. He is survived by his family, friends, neighbours, and many others whose lives he touched.

Peter spent his working life as a classroom teacher, where he had the opportunity to work with and influence many young people.

Peter was courageous by nature and always up for an adventure. He sailed the ocean, kayaked the lakes, traveled the roads on motorcycles, and embraced opportunities to experience life. Peter never allowed fear to stop him from doing something he wanted to do. He was willing to take risks because he understood that some of the best experiences in life require stepping beyond what is comfortable.

He was creative and always ready for a project. When he decided something needed to be done, he had the determination and the will to accomplish it. There was a quiet strength in him, and he often taught those around him without saying much at all.

Peter could be quiet and reserved at times, giving his family room to have their own feelings and opinions. But he also had his limits, and when he drew the line, you knew it. There was a firmness beneath his quiet nature that was unmistakably his.

After retirement, Peter became increasingly social. He enjoyed a good conversation, a chin wag with friends and neighbours, and sharing stories with those around him. He was always ready to sit down, talk, and share a story or two.

For the last ten years, Peter faced significant health challenges. He moved through them with grace and without a great deal of resistance. He accepted what life brought him and continued forward with the same quiet strength that had characterized him throughout his life.

Peter leaves his family with many memories of a man who was not afraid to experience life, take on a challenge, or start another project. His influence will live on in the people he loved and in the lessons he taught by being himself.

A celebration of Peter's life will be planned at a later date. Details will be announced when arrangements have been made.
