Obituary

Peter Spasov

December 9, 1953 - March 15, 2026

Ironically, as a talented writer, Peter would have written the best obituary himself, but alas you’ll have to settle for the family edition as he is regretfully absent. He once passed the first round of the Canadian astronaut program, and though life kept him firmly on the ground, he has now taken his place in The Great Gig In The Sky.

Peter Spasov, age 72, passed away unexpectedly Sunday March 15th in his Millbrook home which he built with his father. He was born December 9th, 1953 in Frankfurt, Germany to (D) Radoi and Marga Spasov. He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1954 on the Arosa Star and later grew up in Oakville where he discovered his love of chess, storytelling and science. He was the first in his family to pursue post-secondary education, completing his Bachelors (UofT) and Masters (UBC) of Engineering. With a love of teaching, he eventually moved to Millbrook to work as a professor at Fleming College for 29 years and later volunteered at the 4th Line Theatre with his family.

Peter was a reserved, brilliant and caring man; he frequently sent emails with articles that reminded him of his family and friends. He could speak for hours, to strangers and friends alike, about books, geopolitics, history, and the cosmos. In his own words, “he regularly hikes, occasionally canoes, and otherwise mucks about in the bush”. Every summer he spent his time camping throughout Ontario’s wilderness, with his favourite area being Killarney Provincial Park. He always lived his life to the absolute fullest, from writing thought-provoking science fiction to backpacking around the globe, Peter achieved whatever he set out to do. The day prior to his passing, he had returned from a beautiful trip to Spain with the love of his life, Renate.

Peter is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 34 years Renate (66; née Menzel), daughters Emilie (33), Hannah (31) and Anika (27), mother Marga Edith Spasov (94; née Worbs). He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

His Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday March 29th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Highland Park Funeral Centre (2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough). All are welcome and a virtual link will be available for speeches at 3:00pm for those unable to attend in person -  https://together.oneroomstreaming.com/KNMV3G

Donations in his honour can be made out to one of the many organizations Peter supported including Indspire, the Peterborough Humane Society, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
