DOMINICO, Richard Alfred
Peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Monday, November 25, 2024 in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of Christine (nee McCarthy) for 56 years. Loving father of Paul Dominico, Julie Stoter (Richard) and Alysha Dominico (Vicky). Cherished grandfather to Gabriel, Grayson, Evan, Bailey and Jasper. Predeceased by his parents Alfred “Fred” and Evelyn Dominico and his brother John “Jack” Dominico. Beloved brother-in-law to Stephen McCarthy (Diane), Julie Buchowski (Dennis), Jeanine Spring (Bill) and to Marybeth Doherty (Sean). Admired Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Richard was a journeyman printer, a writer of four novels, an educator, (ultimately a superintendent in the Near North), a voracious reader, an entertaining storyteller, a pioneering entrepreneur, and an Italian Mama who never let anyone visit without feeding them. He got his B.A. from St. Jerome’s University, Waterloo, in 1969, his B.Ed from OCE, his M.A. from U.of T. and his Principal and Superintendent papers from TDSB. He was a respected and inspirational teacher and leader, who took the risk of leaving the system in 1980 to open Limitless Learning, a private alternative secondary school in Etobicoke because he saw too many youngsters slipping through the cracks of a traditional school. He established a learning environment where only ten pupils were in a class and where individual instruction really happened. He was a large dynamic presence because of his wit, enthusiasm and intelligence. He will be greatly missed.
There will be a celebration of Richard’s life held at the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Rd. on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 3:00-6:00 PM with eulogies starting at 3:30 PM. In memory of Richard and in lieu of flowers, donations to the Palliative Care Unit at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre would be appreciated by the family.
