At the very young age of 92, died in Peterborough on March 12, 2023. Survived by his wife Mary Joanne (Allewell) and children Jack (Joyce, predeceased) Susan (Dennis), Mark, Dianne (Scott), and Jenny (Gary), and his beloved grandchildren Claire, Matt, Sam, Katelyn and Comrie. Born in Belleville and raised in Toronto, Bob met his wife playing badminton in Port Colborne. After marriage, Bob moved to Peterborough in 1960. He was a Civil Engineer, graduating from the University of Toronto in 1953 and working at Peterborough City Hall for the majority of his working life. You may know him from his many letters to the editor where he challenged decisions around city building and land use and inspired others to think about the impact of their actions on the environment. He is known for his tremendous work on the rail trails. He enjoyed walking and riding his bike in years past with Mr. Frank Love and Mr. Gord MacLean (predeceased), and really loved the otters at the Peterborough Zoo. He was fortunate to have several wonderful neighbours. People knew him for his great jokes and dry sense of humour. He always thought it was great to have grandchildren as he had a new generation to tell his jokes too. Most people would be surprised to know he became a pilot in his younger days and flew a Piper 11. He used to fly it over Joanne’s house in Fonthill to let her know that he would be home for Sunday dinner soon. Bob enjoyed reading obituaries, so we hope he enjoys this one too. Bob was an advocate for the environment. In fact, one of the last things he said in the hospital was “what are we going to do about all of the cars?” So, he would encourage everyone to drive less and walk more.
