Obituary

It is with a heavy heart, that we announce the passing of Roy, April 10, 2025, a few months shy of his 74th birthday.

Roy enjoyed a full life. He was always busy going somewhere or doing something. As a young man, Roy participated in the special Olympics and won many medals for swimming. His love of hockey started on Leighton Road where he played goalie when the neighbourhood kids played hockey. Knowing this, his mom and dad started taking him to the Peterborough Petes home games and Peterborough Laker games at the Memorial Centre. His life centered around Hockey, Lacrosse and arena life.....he never looked back.

For many years, Roy worked as a recycler at the Evinrude Centre, retiring a few short years ago. The arena and the people he met there became his family. He cheered on the Petes and the Lakers and had no problem letting them know if they weren't preforming to his satisfaction. The Pete's that went on to the NHL, often sent him pictures or Christmas cards....those were special days for Roy. His favourite NHL team was the team that a Peterborough Petes "boy" played for. He was 100% loyal to his Petes.

Roy is survived by his sister-in-law Maureen Rea. He was predeceased by his mom and dad, Allan & Alma Bateman, and his beloved big brother Wayne.

A heartfelt thank you for the kindness of the Peterborough transit drivers who always knew where to find Roy, to the staff at Fairhaven Home for their kindness and compassion shown to Roy daily and a big thank to Peterborough and the hundreds of folks Roy met along the way that helped him and protected him when he was unable to.

A private internment has taken place; The arrangements entrusted Highland Park Funeral Centre.
