Scott Garland Obituary

Garland, Scott (Lawyer with McCarthy, Hansen & Company LLP Toronto).

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son, brother and grandson at his home in Toronto on Tuesday February 6, 2024. Scott was 27 and had just begun a brilliant career as a Lawyer with McCarthy, Hansen and Company. Scott was the cherished son of Kim (nee Todd) and Ross Garland. Loving brother of Katie Brown (Shawn), dear grandson of Catherine Aspinell (Ron, predeceased), Trevor Garland (predeceased), Jessie Todd, and Henry Todd (Pauline). He will be forever remembered lovingly by his aunts and uncles, Lynn Todd, Terri Crough (Mike), Jim Todd (Vicki), Deane Garland (predeceased), Scott Garland (predeceased), his cousins, Jode, Jensen, Lou (Justin), Amy, Michael, Uri, Tommy & Winnie. He will be deeply missed by his wide circle of friends and co-workers. His dog Mango, a rescue dog from Mexico, has lost his best friend.

Scott was born and raised in Peterborough where he attended St. Catherine’s Elementary school and then Lakefield College School (“LCS”). After graduating from LCS, he obtained a B.A. (hons.) in History from the University of Western Ontario. As an undergraduate, Scott was named to the Dean’s Honour List and focused his studies on the development of international human rights laws in the 20th century. He then pursued his law degree and received his J.D from Queens University. While at law school, he was named to the Dean’s Honour List and received the Global Law Scholarship for his studies at Bader College, where he earned his Certificate in Public International Law.

Scott received a Public Interest Internship Award for his summer work as a Debwewin Summer Law Student at NokiiwinTribal Council in Thunder Bay, where he took pride in providing a public legal education session on An Act Respecting First Nations, Métis and Inuit Children Youth and Families.

Scott was called to the Bar in 2023 and was working his dream job at one of Toronto’s most prestigious Family Law firms, McCarthy, Hansen and Company (“MHC”). While at MHC, Scott was a key team member on a complex appellate mandate that will change the law for vulnerable people. In addition to his technical skills, Scott was known for his innate empathy and ability to “see the way” through a problem, making him a very special lawyer and a very special person. His dedication and strong work ethic will be missed dearly by his colleagues and the families whom he served so well.

Scott had many passions. He loved, nature, poetry, reading, creating new vegan recipes, collecting vinyl, and adored playing with his dog Mango. He was a fantastic athlete and excelled in the sports of Rugby and Hockey. His commitment to veganism, animal rights and human rights was unparalleled.

Scott’s Visitation will be held at Highland Park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Rd., Peterborough on Friday, February 16th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. His Funeral service will take place at All Saints Church, 235 Rubidge St. Peterborough on Saturday February 17th at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the adjacent church hall.
