Toula (Anagnostopoulos) Pappas

PAPPAS, Toula (Stamatoula nee Anagnostopoulos) – While surrounded by all her loving family, Toula passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on September 7th 2023 at the age of 90. She has joined the love of her life her husband Bill Pappas who preceded her by 4 years.

Loving and devoted mother of Gina (Louis), Charley (Georgia) and Dean (Anita). Proud Yiayia of Stacey (Sean), Billy, Basil and Toula. Cherished sister of Chris (Stella) and Aunt to John (Dimi) and Georgia (George) Gina (Jim) and Niki and Litsa, Thomas (Athena), Ikai (Dimitra), and Sister-in-law Soula. 

Toula was born in the village of Gargalianoi, Messinia, Greece in 1933. In her early years, educated in Athens, Toula was a very bright student who learned three languages. In fact, she was awarded a gold watch from the King of Greece for her excellence in school.  She finished first in her class and was accomplished in gymnastics. After the Greek Civil War she had a chance encounter with a dashing young soldier (Bill). She threw pebbles at him to get his attention, starting off a beautiful romance.

Bill came to Canada first to prepare the way. Toula joined her beloved husband in Canada and was married in 1956. While in Belleville, Toula became an excellent bowler, winning city championships. After 1962, Bill and Toula moved to Peterborough where they purchased what would be known as Pappas Billiards, from their uncle, Louis Yeotes. This institution still stands today at the corner of George and Hunter. Toula loved to meet the public, treating them more like family than clientele. She leaves us with a lifetime of wonderful memories in the community. She was most proud of her extended family and always would boast about their accomplishments.  Always devoted to her faith, Toula helped fundraise and build the first Greek Orthodox Church in Peterborough. 

Visitation will be held at the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Road, on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 6:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. The Funeral Service will be held at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 406 Parkhill Road East, on Thursday September 14, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. followed by interment at Little Lake Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church would be appreciated.
