Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Wendy Joan Moore at Hospice Peterborough, following a courageous but brief battle with cancer.

Wendy has left behind her husband Bernie Moore, who together celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary one day prior to her passing; and their two sons, Andrew (Jen) and Steve (Kelly} and four grand-children: Kaelan, Rylee, Anna and Cameron. Her dog Baxter still watches each evening at the living room window, waiting for her return.

Wendy was born in Oshawa on November 4, 1947, the first child of Glen and Rene Wood. She is survived by five siblings: Anne Panter (John), Jill Jackson, Janet Wood, Glen Wood (Karen) and Tom Wood (Kelly). Also remembered with love is deceased sister Patricia Sutherland (Norm).

The Wood family moved to Fenelon Falls in 1960. As a teen Wendy became interested in becoming a teacher, and upon graduating from high school applied to, and graduated from, Peterborough Teachers College. Her first teaching position was at Prince of Wales Public School in Peterborough. Over the following decades, she taught in several other schools throughout the Peterborough Board of Education, and served at the Board Office. Often in retirement, she would be fondly recognized and approached by students from her past.

Wendy had a special relationship with her grand-children. She spent many hours in freezing arenas watching them play hockey, in driving rain during football and field hockey games and she never missed a grand-daughter's annual high school dance recital at Showplace Peterborough. They all called her Grammy and over time their school friends called her Grammy as well. She loved the term.

Her early need to help kids grew, and she participated in the initial development and operation of the Peterborough Block Parents Association, a group dedicated to keeping children street safe. More recently she has been the treasurer of the Teachers for Kids group, formed to help under privileged children compete on a level playing field with their peers. A voracious reader, she belonged to a local book club, and for many years has met with several other retired teachers for joyful Friday breakfasts at Smitty's.

Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the doctors and caring nurses at PRHC Palliative Care, and to the very special staff and volunteers at Hospice Peterborough. To Dr Becca Webster a special Thank You. Your professionalism, understanding and simple kindness to Wendy and her family during this difficult period is deeply appreciated.

In discussions with her family before her passing, Wendy hinted that she would like to have her family invite longtime friends, teaching colleagues and others to come together for friendly remembrances with two Wendy rules: no long speeches and no sadness. To meet her wishes, arrangements have been made with the Northview Gardens, 994 County Rd 19, Selwyn ON for Sunday Sept 20 starting at 1:00 PM.

If considering a commemorative donation, Wendy's family might suggest Peterborough Teachers for Kids or Hospice Peterborough.
