In Loving Memory of Witold Tadeusz Poplawski
With heavy hearts we share that Dr. Witold Poplawski passed on April 28, 2025 at the age of 80, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, correctional psychologist, and poet, Dr. Poplawski was known for his deep compassion, tireless work ethic, unwavering integrity, and deeply kind heart. His life was marked by his persistent commitment to the service of others, both within his profession and among all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a man who listened more than he spoke, who gave more than he took, and who believed in the goodness of people.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Poplawski worked tirelessly to bring compassion, insight, and hope to individuals often overlooked. He was respected by colleagues for his integrity, support, compassion, steadfast principles and quiet strength.
Beyond his profession, Dr. Poplawski was generous, empathetic, supportive, and deeply kind. He touched the lives of countless people, supporting others with a gentle word or a helping hand, and making them feel seen and valued. He was instrumental in the start up of the first food bank in Poland and was especially committed to supporting and offering hope to refugees entering Canada. His legacy is one of empathy in action—a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make in the lives of others.
A gifted and awarded poet, Dr. Poplawski used language to illuminate truth and beauty in the human experience, earning admiration of fellow poets and readers alike.
Dr. Poplawski shared many meaningful years with his first wife Ursula, until her passing in 1992. He later found lasting love again with his beloved wife Alona Rudenko, who was by his side in his final days. He was also a proud and loving father to his son Tomasz Poplawski (Tamara Reasin), and his daughter Anna Hutchinson (Geoff Hutchinson), always supporting them and teaching them to work hard and to chase their dreams. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Carter, Tristan, Cole, Jocelyn, Shiva, Clyde, and Sonia. He was also a loving and supportive brother to his sister Anna Poplawski.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you and utmost appreciation to Wayne Moore, whose unwavering friendship and support deeply touched the life of Dr. Poplawski. Your prayers, insights, understanding, and compassion brought us all invaluable relief and solace during challenging times.
A Celebration of Life to honour Dr. Poplawski will be held on May 9, 2025 between 6:00-9:00 pm at The Knights of Columbus Hall in Peterborough. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Covenant House Toronto, honouring his lifelong commitment to providing assistance to those in need.
He leaves behind a world forever changed by his compassion, his words, and his love.
