Our hearts are saddened by the loss of our good friend Dieter. Our history with both of you goes back to the days of Value Mart on Park St. South when mom and dad (Bob and Marg Shaw) at 713 Park St. would frequent the store daily to chat with Dieter and you. Both are gone now but have fond memories of your early days in the south end. I continued to work with Dieter supporting all of my school initiatives to support families in need at both Christmas and Thanksgiving. You both have added so much to the Peterborough Community. We are all kinder and better people for having Dieter in our lives. I will miss his smile and jabs we would take at each other. I loved him like a brother. Edwina and I send our love to all of you.

As I sit here thinking about Dieter the day after his passing I'm starting to realize how much so many of us owed to him whether we knew it or not. He gave a lot of us our first jobs and with that all the benefits that come with having money but it goes much deeper than that. Whether we were aware of it at the time he was teaching us things even if it was just to take on the day with a smile. Looking back on it now I probably should have payed better attention. I should have said it more while you were here but "thanks" Dieter.

Good bye and RIP to one of the hardest working gentlemen I've had the pleasure of working with, knowing and calling a friend. I learned plenty from the Wittek & no frills family from helping them open their first no frills store about 25 years ago but knowing them through hockey before that. Keep smiling Dieter.

The world has lost a great man indeed ! Dieter was the greatest man I have ever had the privilege of working for [as his his beautiful wife Darcy] ! You couldn t meet a more generous ,friendly , family oriented , community leader ,boss , friend and all around nice guy than Dieter ! I know for sure he has taken that big heart along with the twinkle in his eyes to Heaven to do amazing work beyond ! His was no ordinary life ! MENSCH in German means a person of integrity and honor !The key to being a real Mensch is nothing less than character , rectitude , dignity ...a sense of what is right responsible and decorous ! A term used as a high compliment , implying the rarity and value of that individuals qualities ! Cheers to Dieter ! He was a true Mensch in every sense of the word ! Dieter was proud of his German Heritage and we are certainly proud of Dieter Wittek ! You can t think of this man and not smile ! All that we love becomes a part of us , and Dieter will remain a part of all he touched ! You will be greatly missed big guy ! My thoughts and prayers are with Darcy and the whole family at this very sad time ! Love Now and Always Your Employee - Wendy Harrison xoxo

As a ship's sails take it to a distant shore, Dieter's wings will carry him to Glory! Heaven will be an even better destination, with Dieter Wittek already being there! Dieter was one of the best people we've ever had the privilege of knowing. An honour to have called Dieter "Friend" for almost 40 years! Our clinic on Park St. "neighboured" Dieter & Darcy's South End Value Mart... 'back in the day'. We've been great friends since.
Absolutely quality people from the beginning! Such a rarity to have an entire family exude a radiant positive attitude, exemplary kindness, contagious laughter, limitless integrity and of course unconditional love. Dieter & Darcy have always been transmitters for these qualities. The many fun times we've shared, whether boating in the Gulf of Mexico or cottaging on Big Gull Lake... the many dinners as we "Thai'd" one on.... the list of memories with be treasured.
Our love & deepest condolences to you Darcy, Matt, Brenda, Nick & Natalie and grandchildren.
Sincerely, Dr. Michael & Joan Livingstone
God Bless

Hans and I are so incredibly sad to hear about Dieter's passing. I loved his smile and his laugh and his energy - what a sweetheart! When I married Hans in 1975 it has always been so fun to be his younger-by-a-year, "Auntie Arlene". It is wonderful to read all the lovely, heartfelt comments about Dieter. There is no greater gift than to leave this world having made such an impact on so many people. My heart is full of love, and my thoughts are with Darcy, Matt and Nick and families. See you tomorrow. Peterborough lost a truly remarkable kind Gentleman this week. Always smiling and truly kind to everyone.
He was the first grocery store owner I met when I came to Peterborough. His infectious smile and great sense of humor along with his kindness will dearly be missed by all those who were blessed to have crossed paths with him... His dedication to all those in his life including those who came into his store is why I remained loyal to his store. Deepest condolences to his lovely Wife, Family and Friends. He will be missed...

So sorry to hear of Dieter's passing!!! I worked for Dieter and Darcy at No Frills in Market Plaza as well through the transition to the new location. He was a great guys with a huge heart! I worked for them for 6 years (my first real job) from 15-21 years old! During those years I built many friendships and Dieter felt more like a mentor and friend than my boss! He was such a hard worker and he would always be willing to give anyone a chance to try and make a better life for themselves. Even shoplifters he would usually talk to them and tell them if they needed help to come and see him next time and he would do his best to help! He was also by far the most charitable store owner as he supported numerous local causes to benefit the local community! I remember the time (and I still have photos of Dieter, myself and many other staff shaving our heads for "Cops for Cancer". Dieter gave me such an opportunity with my first job to grow and mature as a person (being the shy introverted kid I was back then), as well as help me put myself through College & University, and I eventually went on to finish two programs at Fleming College as well as complete a four year Bachellor of Science in Nursing degree at Trent! I'm now 32 and have relocated recently to Houston, Texas where I'm working in one of the nations top Level one Trauma centers! Dieter (& Darcy) no doubt helped me get where I am today, and I have so many great memories of them both! If I wasn't so far away I'd love to visit the celebration of life, but maybe someone could send me a program?

Sincerely,
