My deepest sympathies to you Liz and your family. I loved working with Phil and enjoyed the times I spent with you both. I pray you're doing better these days. I lost touch with both of you over the years. After my divorce, I moved out west. I was sad to hear this news, six years later...

Very sorry to hear of Phil’s passing. My condolence to Liz and family. I first met Phil in 1979 while working on the West Patricia land use plan (WPLUP) out of their Cochenour Ont. office. I remember his enthusiasm and positive energy. Steve Gray, Victoria BC slgray8@gmail.com

Hi Liz,

I just found out about Phil from Marlene Fraser. I'm so sorry. I didn't know him for very long but he seemed the best kind of person - always smiling, alway helpful. I will always remember him golfing on our team in the MNRF golf tournament, bending over so low to take his shot as his clubs were so short (for him). And the fun times we had talking about F1 racing and the latest Finnish driver to enter the series. I wonder how many model cars he had to purchase over the years. I don't think he ever won our "pool" as he was never willing to pick his team based on talent alone; he always had to pick the Finns. Please know that I am thinking of you.

Cathy

Liz, my thoughts are with you. I remember helicopter surveying with Phil in northwestern Ontario, appreciating his love of life and his passion for conservation geology. I have a wonderful photo of Phil with my son Erich (then six months old) on his shoulders somewhere near Red Lake, and I treasure those memories.

Dear Elizabeth:

It is such a privilege to know both you and Phil. I was very fortunate to get to work with Phil on the ESTR report. He kept me on the geologic strait and narrow. Our whole family enjoyed the Santa Claus parade outings with you and Phil and our dinners together.
You did a wonderful loving thing for Phil keeping him at home. No one could have done anything more.
Please continue to be in contact with our family. You are always welcome at our home. Love Kim.

I had the pleasure of starting my career in the company of Phil Kor in Ontario Parks when he was the Sr. Conservation Geologist. In a new GIS position, Phil was my “rock” in sharing stories of how long he worked on contract in MNRF. He gave me good advice on buying back time and to persevere through the waiting game. We shared our Dutch heritage, along with Bill Crins, and Phil would regularly treat me to Dutch Gouda from Thunder Bay area every time he went back to Winnipeg to visit his family. He also found out that I had tree planted along the Hwy 11 corridor and found the only block that I both planted and herbicide sprayed. Every year on his way to Winnipeg to visit family, Phil would take a picture of my block, and the tree sizes to share the progress with me over the years. When I left parks, and did the obligatory lunch, they presented me with a framed picture which Kirsty didn’t think was very attractive. But as soon as I opened it I burst into tears, because Phil knew exactly what would be appropriate for me – a picture of my tree planting block west of Upsala.

After I left parks, I would regularly bump into Phil, to be greeted with that awesome bear hug. Unwaveringly kind hearted, fun loving, and authentic, Phil was a gem and it’s hard to imagine this world without him.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Phil has died.
Phil and Dave Sharpe and I worked together on the French River area where Phil introduced Dave and I to perhaps the most magnificent erosional marks on Earth. Phil had recognized the marks during his field work and had concluded that many of them were products of subglacial meltwater erosion. His careful observations and wonderful photography convinced us to do field work together, and Phil became senior author on the definitive work on "s-forms", the term we coined for sculpted rock forms. He was a joy to work with, always curious and open to new ideas. Phil contacted me through my interest in megafloods beneath glaciers, still,a highly controversial topic, his enthusiasm, generous support and careful work gave encouragement when it was most needed. I will look again at his photographs depicting nature as art and remember a dedicated geologist and the kindest colleague.
My condolences to his family.

Dear Liz - We are so sad to learn that Phil is gone. The last few years may have been a trial for you - and for which you have our deepest sympathy - but our memories are of Phil in his prime, the best conservation geologist, interpreter and writer around, and always such a warm heart. Our last outing together was into the still-snowed-in depths of the Lavender Falls gorge one spring. It was tough going, especially the climb back out, but Phil never stopped smiling. It was something new, something geologic, and just what Phil loved. Please let us know, Liz, if there is anything we can do to help, and please drop by if your travels ever bring you this way.
